the story of BETTY + TOM
“Tom would also walk me home from school even though his house was in the opposite direction from mine”
Our story began in high school when I was in grade 12 and Tom was in grade 11. Coincidentally, we had two split classes together that semester: Foods and Accounting.
In the beginning, I actually thought Tom was a little odd but that changed when he kept buying me gummy bears (the ones with the pink packaging) and whenever I was sick, he would always showed up to class with a pack of halls (the ones that are honey flavoured). I guess I was sick quite often in grade 12 since I recall this happening more than once. I always helped Tom with his Foods homework (more so because he never did them) and Tom always helped me with my Accounting homework (because I was sometimes asleep in class).
Our friendship developed when we would head to the Nesters market near school to buy some snacks, and Tom being Tom, wanted to buy me a watermelon so badly and this was when I started liking Tom cause I thought it was odd and cute. (weird, I know) He never bought me that watermelon though.
Tom would also walk me home from school even though his house was in the opposite direction from mine. I think this made me like him even more because who would go out of the way just to walk a girl home and then walk back to their own house when their house wasn't even close by?
Our first date came when we missed each other so Tom decided to walk an hour from his house to my house (not sure why he didn't just take the bus). This was June 15, 2008 and it also happened to be fathers day. He came early in the day and we went on a walk to Fraser Wood Park.. It was a simple date.. but it was quite a memorable one.
Fast forward.. with the encouragement of Tom's brother - Binh and sister-in-law - Diana, we moved to Shanghai for two years after we finished our Bachelors of Business Administration degree. Binh and Diana lived in Shanghai for a year and said it was one of the best experiences they've had. We agree. Thanks for pushing and encouraging us to get out of our comfort zone and do something like this.
Before heading back to Vancouver, we traveled Asia together and the travels together was another amazing experience.
We grew up with each other, we know each other at our worst and at our best.. and now we're getting married and starting our next journey together.
